GOD - A Jealous God?!

                               GOD - A JEALOUS GOD?

For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, Whose name is JEALOUS, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14

This statement from God in the Scriptures of the Bible is a stumbling block to some3. Many regard jealousy as petty and childish. It is imperative to bring forward some facts in order to cast a little light on our often dark understanding and perspectives:

1-All our emotions have a valid place and function in our lives (we being created in the image and likeness of God), but unlike God Himself, all our ‘assets’ have been tainted and corrupted by our selfish and fallen nature. Valid jealousy is a Sentinel against, a warning concerning, or a reaction to a breach or loss, a possible breach or loss (Numbers 5:12-31), or a potential breach or loss in a critical relationship.

2- When we judge others, or God, for being petty or childish for their reactions or ways, we tend to transpose our behaviour and motives on them and charge them accordingly, yet we ourselves resent being thus judged.

3- There is a jealousy that is an expression of pride and selfishness where no injustice is being committed, but the action of the accused is often being treated as a criminal offense.

In contrast jealousy is triggered when the devotion of someone highly loved and valued is being drawn away to another. This may be due to a form of seduction which is actually robbery. Jealousy in this case is a wound caused by theft and betrayal. God our Heavenly Father experiences this when we give our affection and devotion that belongs to Him alone to another. “...because I am broken with their whorish heart, which has departed from Me...” Ezekiel 6:9 The greater part of the hurt being the agreement of the loved one cooperating with the seducer.

4- Often, the offending party is acting in complete ignorance, or worst – total disregard to the pain they are causing and may tend to accuse the offended party of being petty and unreasonable.

HOW WE NEED TO EXAMINE WITH MORE CAREFUL CONSIDERATION THE COMPLAINTS OF PROTESTS OF OTHERS!! When we are ignorant of the perspective or experience of others our judgments are likely to lack empathy and understanding. Consequently our conclusions will lack justice and truth.

CONCLUSION - God is a jealous God Who loves us as His very own dear children, and He is jealous and His heart is broken when we give our heart, mind, and affections, to another.
