This is a delicate issue on many levels, but critical on each nonetheless.

GOD'S DESIGN

The first command or instruction that God gave people when He created us was to, “…be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth...Genesis 1:28. So procreation is a natural drive God designed to keep the earth populated. Now, what separates us from the animals is that we were created in the image and likeness of God Genesis 1:27. Because God is Holy, He created us to be holy and upright in our behaviour. From this information we can conclude that, although we are created with a sexual drive to procreate/reproduce after our kind, we are also expected and bound to function within the confines of God’s holy ordinances, otherwise we will be living in rebellion to Him = sin, and all sin is destructive and works against the wholesome condition that was designed for us as individuals and as a society.

 GOD'S BOUNDARY
The Scriptures teach that sin was in the world, but was not imputed until the Law of God was revealed through Moses. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14, Romans 5:13. This excludes all sexual activity outside the marriage covenant between a man and a woman.  In the chapters of Leviticus 18 & 20, God specifies the many forms of sexual sin and their just punishments under the Law. The New Testament addresses more firmly the sin of fornication in many passages from the teachings of Jesus Christ, throughout the Epistles, and into Revelation. In short, fornication is all sexual activity outside the marriage covenant between a man and a woman.  A verse that sums it up quite simply is, “Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers (sexually immoral/fornicators) and adulterers God will judge.” Hebrews 13:4

With this being said there are a few things that we need to herein clarify: God’s moral laws are for all people for all time. No nation, culture, social tradition is exempt from His demands and ensuing judgment. “In the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commands all men everywhere to repent…” Acts 17:30-31

God’s moral laws are timeless, cross all cultural borders, and are beneficial equally to all. Everything that God calls sin is harmful to everyone, everywhere for all time; “Thou shalt not kill (murder), thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet…” If these laws are heeded, they keep people from being unjustly treated and hurt, and when they are broken, someone is hurt, and eventually so are the lawbreakers themselves.

FORNICATION is sexual activity between two unmarried people. It is also equated to defrauding (overreach, get an advantage, make a gain) in the Bible 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7, in short, taking something that does not belong to you, or taking advantage of someone.

 ADULTERY
What complicates sexual activity and what makes it so harmful if God’s ordinances for it are not followed, is that it is also designed to function in the realm of a common love bond between the husband and his wife and not just a physical union which makes them one flesh, “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder” Matthew 19: 6. If the marriage covenant is breached by an outsider, grievous hurt can be inflicted, family relations disrupted, trust broken, children wounded, and on and on… The damage to people’s lives can cause a massive dominos effect, some of which only eternity may be able to reveal. Father knows best and obedience to Him is always the right way.

The next serious complication is that these intimate affections coupled with the physical drive can be activated outside a healthy marriage covenant relationship which can produce all kinds of complicated problems and hurts; like unwanted children, children born out of wedlock where both mother and child are abandoned and left vulnerable, the baby is aborted, or many other possible scenarios.

INCEST, HOMOSEXUALITY, TRANSGENDER...
The Bible also warns us against ‘inordinate affection’ Colossians3:5 (misplaced or disproportionate affection) which, when coupled with a sexual drive can produce a perverse (twisted/contrary to God's design and function) pursuit or activity like incest, homosexuality/transgender..., and again with devastating and complicating results, and these are sin against God's healthy and holy ordinance for our sexuality.

The good news is that the Mercy and Grace of our Loving Heavenly Father in Jesus Christ the Lord, can take our errors, bad judgment, wanton disobedience, and turn a disaster into something beautiful and healthy if we surrender them up to Him in earnest repentance and faith, but at a possible high price of reaping. King David and Bathsheba are an example of His redemptive grace, though very, very costly. He loves us so much and is waiting for us to run to Him with all our messes and problems. This, however, does not mean that we will not reap what we have sown.

NOTEMarriage in itself does not make everything alright and better if one or both parties are being selfish, inconsiderate, ignorant, cruel,  careless, unloving. In such cases even marriage can be a nightmare prison. So let Jesus be your Everything, and let Him find you a spouse of His choice. Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father, James 1:17

Conclusion - in all sexual activity outside the relation between a man and his wife/a woman and her husband, someone gets hurt, and it is sin before God. But God has the proper, loving, wholesome remedy.
