THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE NOT SUBJECTIVE

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE NOT SUBJECTIVE

                                       (For the local Newspaper)

With the changing times, it is still imperative that we understand that  certain things do not change. Typically, we sometimes easily assume that because changes are implemented socially in order to re-adapt or integrate different thinking, understanding, perspectives by embracing certain beliefs, values, and behaviour, that the former can be disregarded, nullified, or ignored. Such thinking can be dangerously presumptuous. Again, just as the universe has fixed physical laws which cannot be tampered with without consequences, so are the timeless moral laws of God – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

I am not even referring to the ensuing judgment, but even the natural reaping of such behaviours as I had already mentioned in a previous article. How many people today know that which was common knowledge to our parents or grandparents? Let’s quickly review the Commandments:

1 – You shall have no other gods before Me.

2 – You shall not make any idols

3 -  You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

4 – Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

5 – Honor your father and your mother.

6 – You shall not murder.

7 – You shall not commit adultery.

8 – You shall not steal.

9 – You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

10- You shall not covet.

Hopefully most of you are familiar with them, and if not, may they firmly stick with you. With these in mind there are a few things that we must realize:

1 – Before God Almighty, these laws are timeless, borderless, and unchanging. However, in times of ignorance He will overlook to some extent our behaviour (Acts 17:30), but when we know better He expects us to repent.

2 – These laws protect us from evil spiritual influences. There is a natural realm, and there is a spiritual realm. As we abide in these laws by faith, the spiritual powers of darkness have less chance to influence and harm us (although as Christians our righteousness and justification comes only by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ).

3 – These laws keep us from harming one another. Anytime we break any of these laws, we are wronging and hurting someone, regardless of where, and whatever generation or culture we live in. Have you ever been forced to work without a break, lied to, stolen from, treated jealously?

4 -  Please note that each of these commandments actually represent categories, so whatever else the Lord in the Bible calls sin that is not specifically addressed in these commandments, like witchcraft, getting stoned, fornication… will fall under one or more of these commandments. (“…for rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” 1 Samuel 15:23)

5 - Dear friends, just because something maybe socially acceptable, or even legal, does not mean that it is acceptable to God, that it will not harm you and or someone else, and that it will not make you guilty of sinning before God.

For a final thought, in the Bible the Lord teaches us that if we walk in love toward God and toward one another, we are walking in a way that will not hurt anyone, including ourselves. He loves us so much. Please be careful as to what you embrace.
